Makaton sign of the week
Makaton is a unique language programme. By using sign/ and symbols while talking can slow down our pace of talking, it provides additional clues about the meaning of words, it helps with attention and listening skills, develops speech and helps children to make themselves understood. Makaton can also be beneficial for children with English as an additional language ( EAL ).
Starting from January 2020, our school have introduced a Makaton Sign of the week!
During this lockdown, Mr Varga will post some videos how to sign some key words and will teach you sing and sign some easy songs, too!
By teaching and learning a new sign of the week, our school promotes inclusion and our children learn a new skill that helps them build stronger friendships with each other.
The sign of the week will also be introduced on our weekly school assemblies and teachers and parents can support using them in the classroom, while singing, during story times and at home or out in the community. Feel free to take pictures and send them in when your child has successfully used a sign somewhere in the community!
Tips for using Makaton:
- Only sign the key words ( not every word ) when you talk.
- Don’t forget to say the words as you sign.
- Facial expression can help a lot when signing some words. ( happy, ill, sad, naughty, well done )
Happy signing! 😊
